INDEFINITE PRONOUNS (Die Indefinitpronomen)

Introduction
The definitions of some of the English indefinite pronouns on one hand, and those of corresponding German indefinite pronouns differ. This is true with the English any, each, every, all, some versus the German jed-, all-, manch-. Yet, there should to be no problem translating, whether translating logic text or more general language. Check the definitions of those pronouns. For the English definitions see under "jeder".

Function
To loosely describe a being or thing, or entire groups of such, or to loosely describe a limited quantity or measure. Indefinivpronomen stand for nouns (+ article) or accompany a noun (+ article) as attribute. Example:
Er wollte unbedingt jemanden kennenlernen (= By all means, he wanted to become acquainted with someone.)

Comments

1. Definition in Singular: Das ganze, gesamte. All- (Singular) bezeichnet eine Gesamtheit, etwas in seinem ganzen Umfang (in singular form, all- designates a whole, something in its entire extent).
   
2. Definition in Plural: All bezieht sich entweder auf eine Gesamtheit von einzelnen Gliedern, oder auf die einzelnen Glieder einer Gesamtheit (in plural form, "all-" designates an entirety of individual members, or comprises all individual members of a whole set of members).
   
3. Illustrating examples: aller Schmerz, mit all seiner Habe, all das Schöne, allen Ernstes, diese alle, alle beide (= each of both), alle die geladen waren (= all those invited), sie kamen alle, ich grüße Euch alle, alle ehrlichen Menschen, all die Fehler, alle Anwesenden.
   
4. Application Examples
   Alles oder nichts. (= Everything or nothing) - Nom., Sing, Neuter
   Er hat alles Geld verloren. (= He has lost all the money) - Akk., Sing., Neut.
   Bei aller Bewunderung blieb sie skeptisch. (Despite all her admiration, she remained sceptical.) - Here, aller is attribute of Bewunderung, hence it is Dativ, Singular, Femininum.
   
5. It is only for ease of memorizing that we add the nouns (parantheses), the pronoun accompanying these arbitrarily chosen nouns. The form of declension of all- is the same as that of adjectives under class I, i.e. strong.
   
6. All- is also used as amplifier, as in "all dies verdanke ich dir", an amplified alternative to "dies verdanke ich dir". The amplifier does not get declined.
   
7. All = das ganze, gesamte, as in "mit aller Kraft", which means the same as "mit der gesamten Kraft" (mit wem? --> Dat., Sing., Fem.)

These are fixed expressions.

The components bißchen, wenig, paar remain undeclined.

Ein bißchen, ein wenig = etwas.

Ein paar = einige wenige = etliche

• ein- is pronoun for a noun (+ article), referring to an undefined person, thing, or self (i.e. the speaker or writer) instead of ich. ein- may be substituted by man or jemand. Examples:
  Was soll einer (= ich, man, jemand) schon dazu sagen?
  Kennen Sie ein Mittel dagegen? Ja, ich kenne eins.

• Einige, etliche are at least two or three, but less than viele (= many). They are declined like an Adjektiv Typ I (stark). Examples:
  Einiges Geld konnte ich ja dort verdienen. Das machte einigen Eindruck.

• Einige and wenige are used the same way and mean the same. Einige is used more frequently than wenige.

Etwas is an indeclinable neuter. Etwas is used alone, or as attribute usually to a noun. Etwas is used for a thing not further defined, similarly as something. Examples:

Hat er etwas gesagt?
Ich habe etwas Schönes gesehen.
Das ist etwas anderes.
Er glaubt an etwas.

Sometimes etwas is shortened to was . Example:

Nun zu was anderem (= now to something else).

1. jed-, jedermann means all beings or things of a whole set of beings or things. However, jedermann can be used only for persons. Negation: keiner, niemand .
   
2. Following are illustrating examples of jed-.
   Zu jeder Stunde (= at every hour);
   auf jeden Fall (= in every case, loosely stated "in any event");
   er benutzt jede Gelegenheit (= he uses every opportunity);
   zu Anfang jedes Jahres (= at the beginning of every year);
   das weiß ein jeder (= every single one knows this);
   jeder einzelne wurde gefragt (= every single one was asked).

   
   

3. Let us compare the German definitions with those of Webster for American English.
   • any = one, some, one or other selected at random; all;
   • each = one of at least two considered individually; every; everyone of a group considered;
   • every = each and all members of a class without exception;
   • all = the total entity or extent of; the entire or total number, amount, or quantity of: all the saints; every: all manner, all kinds, any whatsoever: beyond all doubt; nothing but, only; each and every one: all were drowned; each and every thing; wholly, entirely, completely.

   
   

4. Emphasis is lent through the amplifier einzeln (en, e, es). Examples:
   Die Mithilfe eines jeden einzelnen hat es ermöglicht. (= The collaborative help of each one has made it possible)
   Es ist die Pflicht eines jeden einzelnen zu helfen.
   

   
   Jed- is declined as adjectiv of Type III (mixed), when used in conjunction with ein-.

Jemand/niemand = someone/no one may be used undeclined. Examples:

Es hat jemand geklingelt, aber es steht niemand vor der Tür.
Es fiel mir schwer, jemand zu widersprechen.
Meister kann auch jemand anders werden.

However, undeclined use is not acceptable in the genitive case. Example:

Das war jemandes ander[e]n Werk (Genitiv) = Das war das Werk von jemand anders (Dativ).

• kein = nicht ein when accompanying a noun (+ article).
  
• kein = niemand, nichts when used in place of a noun.
  
• einzig = amplifier. Example:
  
  Kein einziger ist dageblieben.

  
  

• With man, the writer/speaker refers to a person not further identified, and man may also mean a universe of such persons.
  
• Man is used only in place of a noun (+ article).
  
• Akkusativ is einen , and Dativ is einem . Otherwise, man is indeclinable. Examples:
  
  Je älter man wird, um so rätselhafter wird einem das Leben.
  Man braucht hier keine Uhr.
  

• Manch = der eine und der andere unter vielen.
  This is an unspecified number of individuals or things. That is not as a group, but as isolated members. That is this one and that one among many.
  
• Manch is used either accompanying a noun (+ article), or in place of a noun. Manch is declined as an adjective, Type I (strong). Examples:
  
  Das hat schon mancher vor ihm gesagt. (Nom, M, S)
  Mancher der Anwesenden fühlte sich angesprochen. (Nom, N, S)
  Das war schon manches Mal gescheitert. (Nom, N, S)
  Er hatte dort manchen Bekannten getroffen. (Akk, M, S)
  Er hat schon manche fremden Länder gesehen. (Akk, Pl)
  Ich bin schon mit manchem berühmten Mann zusammengetroffen. (Dat, M, S)
  Wir haben manches Gute von ihm gehört. (Nom, N, S)
  

  Adjectives after manch- are substantiated, except ander-.
  

• ein- is amplifier, such as in manch ein
  
  Manch ein = manch. Manch is then not declined. Example:
  Manch einer hält sich für klüger als er ist.

  
  

mehrere = einige, ein paar, nicht viele, verschiedene .

mehrere may accompany a noun (+ article) or represent a noun. mehrere is declined like an Adjektiv Typ I (stark). Examples:
Mehrere Stunden war ich dort.
Sie war auf mehreren Reisen.
Mehrere kamen herbeigelaufen.

meinesgleichen, ...etc. = jemand, ein Mensch, Menschen wie ich, ...etc.
The pronouns are used to represent a noun (+ article). Examples:

Meinesgleichen handelt nicht so.

• nichts = kein Ding, keine Sache, nicht etwas, nicht das mindeste
  is an indeclinable, neuter indefinite pronoun that is used either by itself, or attributively as Nominativ, Akkusativ, or after Präpositionen. Examples:
  Ich glaube nichts.
  Er sah nichts Gutes.
  Aus nichts wird nichts. (Proverb)

  
  
  

• Amplifiers are gar, ganz und gar, rein gar. Examples:
  Der Junge ist faul, zu gar nichts hat er Lust.
  Wir hörten rein gar nichts mehr von ihm.
  Es gab ganz und gar nichts. (There was/they had absolutely rock bottom nothing)

  
  

• An adjective following nichts is substantiated, except ander-, which remains adjective. Substantiated means turned into noun form, which means also to be capitalized.

Singular sämtlich = ganz, vollständig, gesamt;
Plural sämtlich = an emphasized alle.

sämtlich accompanies a noun (+ article) and is declined as Akjektiv Typ I (stark). Examples:

sämtlicher Abfall
Mit säntlichen (z.B. Bewohnern) stehe ich auf gutem Fuß.

welch = einige, manche, einiges, etwas

represents a preceding noun and is declined as Adjektiv Typ I (stark). Genitiv Singular should be avoided. Examples:

Manchmal waren keine Blumen im Haus. Hans mußte im Laden welche besorgen.
Raison annehmen kann niemand, der nicht schon welche hat. (No one can adopt good judgment who does not already have some).

wer = jemand, einer

stands mostly by itself. Genitiv is not used. Akkusativ is wen, and Dativ is wem. Examples:

Da vorn ist jetzt wer ins Wasser gesprungen. (Over there [in the direction ahead], someone has now jumped into the water)
Ich hab's wem gegeben. (I have given it to someone)
Oft trifft man wen, der Bilder mald, viel seltener wen, der sie bezahlt. (Wilhelm Busch) (Frequently one encounters someone who paints pictures, much more seldom one who pays them).
