The Church Of Hallgrimur- A Great Symbol of Iceland’s Past

The Church of Hallgrimur Majestic is a Lutheran parish church which is extremely tall and its height is calculated to be about 74.5 meters. This church is a symbol of Iceland’s golden past and it is a crown of Reykjavik which is the capital of Iceland. It is the largest church in Iceland and the seating capacity includes around 1200 people. The construction of this building took many years and there was also some controversy involving the building in the initial years.

The construction of the church began in 1945 and took nearly 38 years to complete the whole building. The landmark tower of the building was completed much before the whole building. So, now let me tell you about some essential features of this great structure.

1. One great advantage of this structure is that it is located in the center of the city and it can be viewed from all parts of Reykjavik.

2. The style and architecture of this church is extremely similar to that of Grundtvig’s Church of Copenhagen that is located in Denmark.

3. The church is so tall that it is also used as an observation tower. You can easily climb the stairs of the tower and can reach the terrace from where you can view the whole city and the surrounding mountains.

4. In the front of the church you will find statue of explorer Leif Ericson which was a gift from United States of America.

5. The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in the year 1948, the nave was constructed in 1986 and the steeple and the wings were completed in the year 1974.

6. This grand building is extremely famous all around the world and it is visited by thousands of tourists all the year around.

7. A grand organ of 72 stops was installed inside the church which was made by Johannes Klais of Bonn. The cost of installing this organ was very huge that is why a lot of funds and loans were taken.

8. The steeple area is opened to the public and people who want to use the elevator can pay a small charge for it. The bells that are installed inside the church are gifts from individuals and other institutions.
