The ancient Kangra Fort is located in the outskirts of the Kangra Town of India. Most of the tourists from all across the world love to explore various unrevealed facts of the ancient times which are buried behind the thick walls of this monument. The grand Kangra Fort is located at a distance of 20 kilometers from the Dharamshala which is a small town of India.

The grand and primordial Kangra Fort was built by the royal Kangra Family which belonged to the Katoch Dynasty. The great Kangra Fort is one of the largest forts which are present in the Himalayas and it is also the most ancient monument of India. This monument traces out its origins from the Trigarta Kingdom which has also been mentioned in the Mahabharata.

Mahmud of Ghazni took the Kangra Fort in 1009 AD and in the year 1337, this primeval monument was captured by Muhammad Bin Tugluq. After some years, this fort was captured by Firoz Shah Tugluq, who was the successor of Muhammad Bin Tugluq, in the year 1351.  After a time period of fourteen months, the Kangra Fort was conquered by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Later on, Jahangir equipped this fort with troops and he also appointed a Governor to investigate about the chiefs of turbulent hills.

In the 18th century, the Mughal Empire faced its declination and Raja Sansar Chand II succeeded in capturing this grand fort of his ancestors. This grand fort was heavily damaged in the year 1905 during the earthquake. This primordial monument is well enhanced with a grand entrance which also includes a small courtyard that lies between the two gates of this gigantic fort. There is a long narrow passage which leads to the entrance of the fort. At a distance of 500 feets, this path way takes a sharp turn and passes through the Jehangiri Darwaza. This grand fort stands on the steep rock piece of the Purana Kangra and it dominates the surrounding valley.
